Barclays Gibraltar Staff in Olympic Fundraising Initiative

barclaysStaff at Barclays in Gibraltar are preparing to undertake a series of fundraising events whereby they will take part in a range of Olympic-themed challenges and community events over five days to raise money for charity as part of a Barclays-wide initiative.

The aim of the event, entitled ‘500 in 5’ is for staff from Barclays branches across Europe to raise £50,000 for charity in one week.  Barclays staff from branches in the UK, Jersey, Guernsey and Gibraltar have all taken up the challenge, which runs from Monday, August 6th to Friday, August 10th.

Employees at Barclays in Gibraltar were keen to take part in the initiative and have organised a raft of fundraising activities in the hope of raising over £500. During the week, they will be cycling a marathon in the branch, hosting an Ascot themed race night, running a quiz and hosting an Olympic-themed family fun event.

The money raised will be split between five local charities which are: Childline, Breast Cancer Research, The Gibraltar Alzheimer’s and Dementia Support Group, St John Ambulance Service and Research Into Childhood Cancer (RICC). Each activity will be held in aid of a different charity.

The first event, taking place on Monday, August 6th will see sporting staff members attempt to cycle a marathon on bikes in Main Street branch and the reception of Regal House during the working day. Each volunteer will complete a portion of the 26 mile cycle before handing over to a colleague. Spectators are welcome to come and support the cyclists throughout the day and to contribute to the fundraising efforts to raise funds for Breast Cancer Research in Gibraltar.

On Tuesday, August 7th Barclays will host a quiz night at The Lord Nelson Inn, Casemates in aid of Childline, and all quiz fans are invited to take part.

On Thursday, August 9th an Ascot themed race night will be taking place at Bruno’s in Ocean Village in aid of Research into Childhood Cancer, and again, all are invited.

The finale will take place on Friday, August 10th at an action packed Olympic-themed family fun event at The Victoria Stadium in aid of St John Ambulance Service and The Gibraltar Alzheimer’s and Dementia Support Group.  During the evening, spectators will be able to watch a five a side football and a Padel Tennis tournament. There will also be bouncy castles, a children’s sports event and a raffle.

The entire community is welcome to attend any of these events in order to have some fun and raise money for a range of worthwhile local charities. In order to raise extra funds, staff will also be hosting a number of smaller events for their colleagues to participate in during the week, including a raffle and fundraising staff lunch.

Event organiser and Barclays Counter Manager Sarah Hopkins said: ‘This is a wonderful opportunity for Barclays to engage with the community as well as raise funds for charity. It would be fantastic for members of the community to come along to our events and have a fantastic time. There really is something for everyone throughout the week and it is a great way to commemorate the 2012 Olympic Games.’
